Clinical Information

Muscle biopsies are performed in individuals who are suspected of having an inherited muscle disease (a muscular dystrophy) or an acquired muscle disease which is most often caused by inflammation of the muscle. For most patients, an open muscle biopsy is needed to get a large enough sample for detailed testing.

Notify Histology of scheduled procedure at least 24 hours in advance at (616) 267-2620.

Specimen Collection: Tissue

 

Container(s): Sterile Container on Saline Moistened Gauze

Minimum Volume to Collect: 

Adults-Three 1.1cm pieces of unclamped tissue, or 3cm of clamped tissue along the longitudinal orientation of the muscle fibers and away from the tendon insertion.

Pediatric-1.5 x 1.0 x 0.5 cm piece of unclamped tissue. The specimen should be taken from the mid-portion of a muscle, free of tendon, aponeurosis, or other dense connective tissue.
