Test to be used by Occupational Services clients only in the event of workplace needlesticks on EXPOSED personnel.

Collection Instructions

Specimen Collection: Blood

Container(s): 2 Gold Tops (Serum Separator-SST Gel)

Preferred Volume to Collect: 10.0 mL

Minimum Volume to Collect: 5.0 mL

Neonate Volume to Collect: 

Capillary collect ok: Yes

Microtainer acceptable: Yes

Collection Instructions:

  • Test to be used by Spectrum Health Occupational Services clients only in the event of workplace needlesticks on EXPOSED personnel.
  • Gently invert gold tube(s) 8 - 10 times to mix clot activator with blood.
  • Specimen should be processed within 2 hours – See Processing Instructions.

Processing Instructions (Laboratory, Outpatient or Off-site collection)

Centrifuge/Spin: Yes

Processing Instructions:

  • Allow blood to clot for 30 minutes in a vertical position and centrifuge within 2 hours.

Transport Temperature: Refrigerate

Specimen not centrifuged within 2 hours.

Specimen Stability

Ambient: 8 hours

Refrigerate: 72 hours

Frozen: aliquot serum for longer storage

Laboratory Retention: 72 hours

Reflex Information

Reflex approved by MEC

Specimens with Reactive HIV 1/HIV 2 Ab Screen results will be automatically reflexed to the HIV Confirmation Test (Geenius) unless the patient has had a previous positive confirmation test.

Specimens with Reactive HCV Ab results will be automatically reflexed to the quantitative Hepatitis C Virus RNA test
