Collection Instructions

Direct Venipuncture

  • Collect all tubes of whole blood using a 21 gauge or larger needle.
    • Butterfly (21 gauge) is OK to use.

Reference Range

Interpretive Comments

Verify Now P2Y12 assay for effect of clopidogrel (Plavix) and related drugs on platelet activity.

Verify Now P2Y12 assay results are reported in Platelet REactivity Unites (PRU)

Lower PRU values are indicative of effective antiplatelet drug inhibition of platelet activity.

Higher PRU values are indicative of ineffective antiplatelet drug inhibition of platelet activity.

Patients on chronic clopidogrel (Plavix) thearapy with PRU values at or below 180 are considered adequate responders.

Patients with PRU values at or above 208 may proceed to cardiac surgery.

Patient with PRU values below 208 should have Verify Now P2Y12 repeated in 12 - 24 hours.
