Container(s): Gold Top (Serum Separator-SST Gel) or Red Top (Plain, No additive) or Mint Green Top (Lithium Heparin Gel)

Preferred Volume to Collect: 5.0 mL

Minimum Volume to Collect: 2.0 mL

Neonate Volume to Collect: 0.5 mL

Collection Instructions:

  • Fasting specimen required.
  • Gold/Red tube: Gently invert 8 –  10 times to mix clot activator with blood.
  • Mint Green tube: Gently invert 8 – 10 times to mix lithium heparin anticoagulant with blood.
  • Specimen should be processed as soon as possible - See processing instructions

 

Processing Instructions (Laboratory, Outpatient or Off-site collection)

  • Processed Specimen: Serum/Plasma
  • Centrifuge/Spin: Yes
  • Aliquot: Yes
  • Minimum volume plasma/serum: 0.5 mL
  • Processing Instructions:
    • Serum is preferred specimen type.
    • Gold Tube/Serum: Allow blood to clot for 30 minutes in a vertical position and centrifuge within 2 hours. Pour over specimen in aliquot tube and freeze immediately (before transport).
    • Green Tube/Plasma: Centrifuge after collection. Pour over specimen in aliquot tube and freeze immediately (before transport).
  • Transport Temperature: Frozen

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimen not centrifuged within 2 hours.
  • Serum/Plasma is not frozen.

Specimen Stability

Ambient: Not acceptable

Refrigerate: Not acceptable

Frozen: aliquot plasma/serum for longer storage

Laboratory Retention: 72 hours

Growth hormone has a short halflife and is secreted in an episodic manner.  Consequently, a single random value may not be adequate for evaluating growth hormone adequacy.
