Collection Instructions

Before draw:

  • Patient must not consume any alcohol or ingest vitamin supplements for 24 hours before the specimen is drawn and must be fasting (12-14 hours).
  • If Vitamin A and Vitamin E are ordered together, only one tube is required.

 

Specimen Collection: Blood

 

Container(s): Red top (no additive) only.

Preferred Volume to Collect: 6.0 mL

Minimum Volume to Collect: 2.0 mL

Neonate Volume to Collect: 2.0 mL

Collection Instructions:

  • Gently invert tube(s) 8 – 10 times after collection.
  • Protect from light
    • Wrap tube lightly in paper towel or tinfoil
    • Plastic amber pour off tubes are acceptable to protect from light
  • Specimen should be processed within 30 minutes – See Processing Instructions

    • Wrap tube lightly in paper towel or tinfoil
    • Plastic amber pour off tubes are acceptable to protect from light
  • Spin at 3500 for 5 minutes after 30 minute rest
  • Pour over into brown pour-over tube.
  • Minimum volume serum: 1.0 mL serum
  • Store refrigerated
