Specimen Collection: Blood

 

Container(s): 4.5 mL Mint Green Top (Lithium Heparin Gel) or 5.0 mL Gold Top (Serum Separator-SST Gel)

Preferred Volume to Collect: 4.5 mL

Minimum Volume to Collect: 2.0 mL

Neonate Volume to Collect: 1.0 mL

  • After collection, gently invert tube 8-10 times.
  • Specimen should be processed within 2 hours – See Processing Instructions.

  • 0 up to 40 years: 0.00 to 2.00 ng/mL
  • 40 up to 50 years 0.00 to 2.50 ng/mL
  • 50 up to 60 years: 0.00 to 3.50 ng/mL
  • 60 years and up: 0.00 to 4.00 ng/mL

 

A free PSA of 25% or less is an indication for a follow-up prostate biopsy when the total PSA is between 4 and 10 ng/mL.

There is limited data on the clinical utility of free PSA results when the total PSA is greater than 10 ng/mL.
