Specimen Collection: Body Fluid

 

Container(s): Mint Green Top (Lithium Heparin Gel) or Red Top Vacutainer  

Preferred Volume to Collect: Full tube (4.5 mL Mint Green or 6 mL Red tube)

Minimum Volume to Collect: 0.5 mL

Amylase Peritoneal Fluid:  Values greater than or equal to three times (3x) a simultaneously analyzed serum value are considered abnormal in ascites of pancreatic origin. Other peritoneal and intestinal disorders may also cause elevation of amylase.     

 


Amylase Pleural Fluid: Pleural fluid amylase greater than the upper limit of normal (ULN) for serum amylase or pleural fluid amylase/serum amylase ratio greater than or equal to 1.5-2.0 is abnormal.  Abnormal pleural fluid amylase is seen in pancreatitis, esophageal rupture, gastroduodenal perforation or malignant effusions.
