Specimen Requirements

Submit only one of the following specimens:

Specimen Type: Plasma
Container/Tube: Mint Green Top (Lithium Heparin Gel) Fasting specimen recommended
Volume: 4.5 mL
Minimum volume: 1.0 mL plasma
Collection Instructions: Centrifuge within 2 hours

Specimen Type: Serum
Container/Tube: Gold Top (Serum Separator-SST Gel) Fasting specimen recommended
Volume: 5 mL
Minimum volume: 1.0 mL serum
Collection Instructions: Allow specimen to clot for 30 minutes and centrifuge within 2 hours

Special Instructions

A fasting specimen requires:

No caloric or caffeine intake for at least 8 hours. Do not drink (other than water), eat, smoke, chew gum, candy, cough drops, etc. for at least 8 hours prior to your blood tests.

Specimen Stability

Ambient: 12 hours

Refrigerate: 72 hours

Frozen: aliquot plasma/serum for longer storage

Laboratory Retention: 72 hours


Inpatient SIL: 8 hours (green/gold)

Test Frequency

Available daily, usual TAT 1 day.

LDL (calc) is invalid if the Triglycerides are greater than 400 mg/dL.
