Neonate Volume to Collect: 1.0 mL

• Indicate source.
• Send to laboratory as soon as possible.
• If outpatient collection, transport refrigerated.

Transport Temperature: Refrigerated

Acceptable

Staining has lower sensitivity for these specimen types unless the patient is HIV-positive (typically a high organism burden).

Specimen Collection: Pleural fluid, induced sputum, or transtracheal aspirate.
