Specimen Collection: Urine, 24-hour collection

Container(s): Plastic 24-hour urine jug

  • Preferred Volume to Collect: 24 Hour Urine - Entire collection
  • Minimum Volume to Collect: 24 Hour Urine - 10.0 mL 
  • Neonate Volume to Collect: 24 Hour Urine - 10.0 mL

 

Collection Instructions:

  • No additive

    • If urine must be collected with a preservative for other analytes, only hydrocholirc acid (14-47 mmol/L urine, e.g. 5 mL 10% HCl or 5 mL 30% HCl per liter urine) or boric acid (81 mmol/L, e.g. 5 g per liter urine) may be used.

  • Refrigerate specimen during collection.

  • Starting and end times of collection are required.

  • Specimen must be drawn for serum/plasma creatinine within 48 hours of urine collection.

    • Centrifuge blood within 2 hours of collection

  • Keep container upright at all times and check that lid is fastened evenly and securely.
