Specimen Requirements
Submit only one of the following specimens:
Specimen Type: Serum
Container/Tube: Gold Top (Serum Separator-SST Gel)
Volume: 5 mL
Minimum volume: 0.5 mL serum
Collection Instructions: Allow specimen to clot for 30 minutes and centrifuge within 2 hours
Specimen Type: CSF
Container/Tube: Sterile transport tube
Minimum volume: 0.5 mL
Specimen Transport Temperature
Refrigerate
Lab Staff Instructions
Lab Central Staff: All CSF specimens to Hematology first.
Specimen Stability
Ambient: Send to laboratory as soon as possible
Refrigerate: 72 hours
Frozen: aliquot serum for longer storage
Laboratory Retention: 7 days (serum in hematology), 4 days (serum in microbiology)
Reflex Information
Mandatory Reflex approved by MEC
Cryptococcus Antigen ordered on CSF, Cryptococcus CSF Panel (Cryptococcus Ag and Fungal Culture) will be performed
Test Frequency
Available daily, usual TAT 1 day.
