Tissue specimens less than 0.1 cm may yield insufficient results if submitted for Tissue Pathology. LAB2111263 Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Cytology should be ordered and specimen collected in CytoLyte.

Specimen Requirements

Tissue Pathology

For Routine Gross and Microscopic Examination or for Routine Gross Examination Only

  • Tissue, Fixed in 10% Formalin unless microbiology or cytogenetic studies are requested then must be submitted fresh (No Preservative).
Intraoperative Consult

Intraoperative gross and microscopic evaluation of specimen. Pathologist will report back to procedure room with preliminary result.

  • Frozen Section
    • Tissue, Fresh (No Preservative).
  • Lymph Node Protocol
    • Tissue, Fresh (No Preservative).
    • Evaluation of lymph node (or mass) tissue to diagnose lymphoma v. other. Tissue will be triaged for additional testing (Flow Cytometry, Cytogenetics, Microbiology) as needed by pathologist.
  • Sentinel Lymph Node Touch Imprint
    • Tissue, Fresh (No Preservative).
    • Evaluation of Sentinel Lymph Node for suspected metastatic disease.
  • Gross Examination
    • Tissue, Fresh (No Preservative).
    • Gross evaluation only by a pathologist. Can be converted to microscopic evaluation if deemed necessary by pathologist.
Muscle Biopsy

DO NOT ORDER TISSUE PATHOLOGY. See LAB1230451 Muscle Biopsy

Skin Biopsy for Immunofluorescence

Assessment of connective tissue disorders, bullous diseases, and certain types of vasculitis.

Sural Nerve Biopsy

May aid in assisting with diagnosis of peripheral neuropathies.

Specimen Stability

Ambient: If formalin has been added

Refrigerate: If no Formalin has been addded

Frozen: Not applicable

Laboratory Retention: 2 weeks after final report
