Specimen Collection: Blood

 

Container(s): Gray Top (Potassium Oxalate and Sodium Fluoride) or Red top (no additive)

Preferred Volume to Collect: 3.0 mL

Minimum Volume to Collect: 2.0 mL

Neonate Volume to Collect: 2.0 mL

Capillary collect ok? Yes

Collection Instructions:

  • After collection, gently invert tube 8-10 times.
  • Gray Top is preferred tube.
  • Specimen should be processed – See Processing Instructions.

    • Centrifuge after collection
    • Pipette plasma into aliquot tubes
  • Red top:
    • When tubes are clotted (30 minutes), centrifuge specimens
    • Pipette serum into aliquot tube
