Clinical Information

Concentrated wet preparations and permanent trichrome and stains are made from fixed stool specimens and are used to detect Giardia, Cryptosporidium, intestinal protozoa, and helminth eggs are larvae.

 

Ordering Instructions

Please indicate the following on the order

  1. Past foreign residence or recent foreign travel followed by at least 2 weeks of diarrhea?

  2. Immunocompromised status?

  3. Unexplained microcytic anemia or peripheral eosinophilia?

  4. Unique exposure (daycare, MSM, waterborne outbreak, etc.)? 

 

Ova and parasite exam is not recommended on patients who have been hospitalized more than three days. Beyond the three days, the yield of ova and parasites or intestinal pathogens is very low, with recommendation to order C. difficile toxin testing or consult Infectious Disease.

Stool Collection Kit - SAF Fixative Container

 

Collection Instructions

Submit only ONE of the following specimen types:

Specimen Type: Stool

Container/Tube: SAF Fixative container (clear liquid preservative) of the stool specimen collection kit, Formalin, ECOFIX

Volume: Fill to the line on the container

Minimum volume: 5 mL

Collection Instructions:

  • If collecting multiple specimens for Ova and Parasite, it is recommended that up to 3 specimens be collected over the course of 7- 10 days. Successive specimens submitted on the same day will be rejected.
  • Transfer specimen to the vial within one hour of collection.
  • Fill the vial until the liquid reaches the line on the label. Do not overfill.
  • Label the containers with full name and date and time of collection.
  • Secure caps to avoid leaks. Leaky specimens may be canceled and will need to be recollected.

Specimen Stability

Ambient: 7 days

Laboratory Retention: 3 days

Test Frequency

Available Monday - Friday, usual TAT 2-3 days.

Reference Range

No ova, parasites, or cysts observed by EIA, wet exam, or permanent stain.
