Collection Instructions

Note: 2 specimen types. Submit only one.

 

Specimen collection: CSF

Container(s): Sterile, screw-capped transport tube or CSF tube

Preferred volume to collect: 1.0 mL

Minimum volume to collect: 0.5 mL

Neonate volume to collect: 0.5 mL

Collection instructions:

  • Label container with patient information, specimen source, and date of collection.
  • Maintan sterility
  • Send to lab immediately for specimen processing

 

Specimen collection: Blood

Container(s): Lavender top (EDTA)

Preferred volume to collect: 3.0 mL

Minimum volume to collect: 1.5 mL

Pediatric volume to collect: 1.5 mL

Capillary collect ok: Yes

Microtainer acceptable:  Yes - 3 full microtainers

Collection Instructions:

  • Gently invert EDTA tube(s) 7 – 8 times after collection.
  • Specimen must be received in Molecular Diagnostics within 24 hours of collection.

Specimen Stability

CSF: Specimen should be refrigerated and received within 24 hours of collection

Whole Blood or Plasma:

If received within 24 hours of collection, specimen can be transported at ambient temperature or refrigerated.

If transport will exceed 24 hours, recommend specimen be refrigerated.

Specimen transport should not exceed 72 hours.

Laboratory Retention: Extracted viral nucleic acids retained 1 month.

Test Frequency

Available daily usual TAT 24 hrs.

Reference Range

Negative: <300 copies/mL

Positive results are reported as Herpes simplex type 1 DNA detected or Herpes simplex type 2 DNA detected.
